What is hypoallergenic dog food?
Hypoallergenic dog food does not have a single specific definition, and what is best depends on the situation. Basically, hypoallergenic dog food is formulated to minimise the risk of allergies. There are several ways to make dog food low in allergens. Hypoallergenic dog food can be formulated in three ways:
- Based on a single protein source.
- Based on hydrolysed proteins: these are cut into such small pieces that the dog's body no longer recognises them and no reaction can occur.
- Based on unique protein sources: these are rarely or never used in regular dog food, which reduces the risk of allergies.
What is the best hypoallergenic dog food?
At Riverwood, we believe that the best hypoallergenic dog food is composed of unique protein sources. Our dog food is formulated with proteins that only 2% of all dogs can develop an allergy to. Each type of food consists of three different protein sources and is free from artificial colours, flavours and fragrances. In many cases, this means carefree enjoyment of our dry dog food, wet food and natural dog snacks.
How to recognise an allergy to dog food
A food allergy causes a dog's immune system to react hypersensitively to a certain ingredient in its food. Although every dog can react differently, the following symptoms are common.
Skin and coat problems
When the immune system tries to break down the allergy-inducing substance, inflammatory products such as histamine are released into the skin. Histamine causes severe itching, particularly in the groin, armpits and on the paws. If your dog scratches for a long time, the itching can worsen and there is a risk of skin rash, skin inflammation or hair loss.
Stomach and intestinal complaints
If your dog develops an allergy to dog food, their stomach and intestines can become upset. This often results in frequent vomiting, persistent diarrhoea or excessive flatulence.
Recurring ear infections
Recurring ear infections can also indicate a food allergy. If your dog scratches its ears a lot, shakes its head regularly, yelps loudly when its ears are touched, or if its ears look red and smell bad, there is a chance it has an ear infection.
Hypoallergenic dog food for allergies
A vet can determine whether your dog does indeed have an allergy to dog food. Once a food allergy has been diagnosed, the best thing you can do is buy hypoallergenic dog food. This will allow you to avoid the substances your dog is allergic to, causing the symptoms to disappear.
